About This Course

Students taking this course will develop a deeper understanding of French language and culture through the study of the arts. France is the birthplace of many internationally renowned artists and the cradle of numerous important artistic and intellectual movements within European and global contexts. This course is an introduction to the study of central themes in French artistic expression, and is designed to familiarize students with key concepts and vocabularies that are relevant to the subject. Different modes of artistic representation, such as the visual and performing arts are studied to explore how different art forms have contributed to the rich heritage and identity of French culture. Students will develop specific written and verbal skills for observing, describing, and analyzing various artistic mediums including poetry, painting, music, film, and other sources of creative and visual expression.
